The main reason I bought this book, was able to see, not its UK DVD format area of the United States. (Unfortunately, my Playstation 3 is not present). It is easy to program the Philips DVP3980 as a "free zone".

I read good reviews before buying and reported conversion to 1080p. In my experience, so far this is true.

My only disappointment is the lack of optical audio output to connect to my (short) can be replaced older recipients. How to use the TV speakers via HDMI.

I wanted the parents to enjoy their new Sony Bravia HDTV, so I thought upscaling DVD player would be very appropriate. This model seems to be compatible with other Sony products. It 'easy to use and set-up and the sound was good, but the HDMI picture quality was poor.

I connected over HDMI and watch a DVD of a few and thought it looked a bit 'grainy. So I checked the resolution and was set to 1080p (1920 x 1080). Then I connected a DVD player with component cables, and guess what? Absolutely no difference, both images are grainy as well.

Seemed a Sony plays all my DVD recorder, unlike my previous Samsung DVD-player, I spent more money. This DVD player works great. The only thing I feel is missing is a button to open near the DVD. Other then played with your DVD as reliable as a DVD player should be.

What more can I say? This is a pretty basic player that produces 1080p video and audio quality. Good features and onscreen menus are easy to navigate. The only negative I can see is that the buttons on the top of the device is relatively small and thin. Must "know" where they are, to squeeze because it is almost impossible for their brand, especially if the device is hidden under a shelf in an entertainment center, for example. But otherwise there is no problem. The remote control is also prepared and easy to use. I think I preferred the most used buttons (play / pause / stop / advance, etc.) to be top of the remote so you can actually hit my thumb, but they are at the bottom of the remote, which means that you must pass the remote control in hand up to access these buttons. Again, a minor irritation. The price of the player and the quality of production more than offset these negative children.

1. When disks reading makes a lot of noise.

2. You can not play WMA files as claimed. AVI files have a fixed bitrate and screen resolution.
